Ryanne’s story: My husband and I met while we were working at a Christian sports camp for kids while we were in college. It wasn’t until five years later that we reconnected and a year and a half later, we were married.
We then wanted to begin our family, which quickly became not exactly what we had planned. We tried for a year to become pregnant and were unsuccessful. As we prayed and waited, we felt like God wanted us to start our family through adoption and foster care.
We were licensed and within two days received a call from the family that my cousin’s three-month-old son needed a home. Two weeks later Zachery Levi became a part of our family. He was the happiest little guy, and we were in love.
Fast forward a year later and we were still trying to become pregnant when we decided to take in a teenage foster daughter. Two weeks after taking her in, we found out I was pregnant! Three children in a year and a half was a little crazy, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Zachery officially became part of the family in August of 2014 after a very long adoption process.
What would you like people to know about adoption and adoptive families? Adoption is amazing and beautiful, but at the same time, it’s very hard and stressful.
Adoption involves lots and lots of paperwork, lawyers, more paperwork and waiting. If there is anything that we have learned from this process, it is that there are a million what if’s and people constantly ask you about the “what if’s.”
Even though we know people are asking with good intentions, we don’t always need to be reminded of them. At the end of the day no matter what, our son is “our son” and we are going to do everything to the best of our ability to let him know that he is loved and his life matters. (So beautifully articulated, thanks, Ryanne!)

Funny things your kids have said or done: every night before Zachery and Aubrey go to bed we tell them that we love them.
Zachery will go through a whole list of “I love you this much, ” and he will stretch his arms out. Then he says I love you to the mountains, but our favorite is when he says I love you to the moon front and back instead of saying to the moon and back! (So endearing!)
Best parenting advice received: Everyone wants to tell you how to do things, but do what works for you and your kids. Parenting is hard, but just remember you are not alone. There are parents out there having your same struggles.
